What Is Artificial Stone and How Is It Made?
Artificial stone can be divided into two main groups: cast stone and molded stone. These two techniques are still in use today. However, they differ from one another enough that companies that manufacture artificial stone usually specialize in one of them.
Cast artificial stone, as the name suggests, is usually used to produce castings. This method is most commonly used to produce garden decorations such as sculptures, fountains, stucco elements, etc. The production process itself involves the use of casting molds, from which the finished product is obtained.
Impressed stone has more in common with sculpture.
It can be shaped exceptionally well while the concrete mixture is still fresh. This method is used to create, among other things, artificial rocks, artificial trees, and unique decorations. When creating decorations using this technique, the result is usually a one-of-a-kind product. This is because it is made entirely by hand without the use of casting molds that replicate the same shape every time. Naturally, molds are also used in this technique, but in a completely different way—most often not to achieve a specific shape but solely to create texture
This method of producing artificial rocks is currently the best and most versatile.
It allows for the creation of diverse three-dimensional formations that can be adapted to their intended location, without being limited to prefabricated decorative components that would need to be adjusted each time. Artificial stone itself, whether made by casting or molding, has the unique property of providing an excellent substrate for the growth of lichens.
Indirectly, this is a desirable trait that lends realism over time. Whether they are artificial rocks, trees, or sculptures, over time they acquire a sort of “patina” that enhances the final product. This is a property that is essentially impossible to achieve with synthetic materials.
