Afrykarium in Wrocław is one of the most recognizable zoological projects in Europe and the world's first facility devoted exclusively to African ecosystems. The project was designed as a combination of an oceanarium, a large-volume aquarium and a modern zoological pavilion, with the aim of faithfully recreating natural habitats found on the African continent.
As part of the project, we participated in the delivery of comprehensive biotope decorations with a total area of approximately 18 000 m². The scope included the construction of artificial rocks, underwater rock formations, artificial coral reefs, artificial trees and landscape elements recreating natural animal habitats. A particular challenge was maintaining a high level of realism while meeting the technical requirements of large-format aquarium tanks and zoo enclosures.
The project was the result of almost two years of international cooperation with Spanish specialists from the theming industry. The team included structural welders, shotcrete operators, sculptors, geologists and specialists responsible for aquarium decorations. One of the most demanding stages was the production and installation of more than one thousand artificial corals installed underwater by divers.
Afrykarium is an example of combining art, engineering and modern biotope construction technologies. The project shows how large-scale artificial rocks, aquarium decorations and realistic themed environments can support educational, breeding and exhibition goals while creating a distinctive experience for millions of visitors. During the first two years after opening, the facility welcomed more than two million guests.
