The Southeast Asian Rainforest at Tallinn Zoo is a large-scale biotope project delivered for a new exhibition dedicated to the tropical ecosystems of Asia. Skalisty completed the works in 2022, and the scope covered approximately 1,400 m² of decorations. The client was Tallinn Zoo, while the general contractor for the facility was Ehitus5ECO OÜ.
The main element of the project was a series of monumental artificial rock cliffs and formations, designed as part of a naturalistic environment for animals inhabiting the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Hand-sculpted surfaces, irregular faults and varied textures were combined with lush vegetation, water and exhibition architecture, creating a highly realistic space. The facility presents, among others, Asian small-clawed otters, binturongs, fishing cats, Lyle's flying foxes and rare bird species.
An important part of the project was the scenery of ruins inspired by the Angkor Wat temple complex, which gives the exhibition a distinctive cultural context and emphasizes its Asian theme. The scope also included the construction of two artificial waterfalls and a rock cave serving as the main entrance. As a result, visitors are introduced to the atmosphere of a humid tropical forest from the very first stage of the route.
Artificial rocks were also built in the outdoor otter enclosure, where they serve both decorative and practical functions by shaping pond edges and areas that support animal activity and rest. The entire theming was designed around the function of a modern zoological facility, combining realistic appearance, durability and requirements related to maintaining high temperature and humidity.
The exhibition opened to visitors in May 2023. Its purpose is not only to present the biodiversity of rainforests, but also to educate visitors about endangered species and the importance of protecting their natural habitats. The project shows how artificial rocks, waterfalls, architectural reproductions and carefully designed biotopes can create an immersive space for animals and visitors.
