Project Overview

The European Otter Enclosure at Wrocław Zoo is a naturalistic biotope project inspired by the environment of a Polish river. The goal was to create a realistic space for the European otter, where artificial rocks, earth imitation, natural stones and beach elements form a coherent arrangement referencing a riverside landscape. The project covered both internal and external enclosure walls, giving the entire exhibition a natural and authentic character.

The scope included 220 m² of decorations, including rock formations built on steel truss structures and masonry and polystyrene substructures. An important element was also a wall coating imitating earth, with natural stones and soil material embedded in it to create the effect of a raw riverbank. The scenery was complemented by a beach imitation in the form of rippled sand, reinforcing the natural character of the enclosure.

The project shows how properly designed artificial rocks for zoos can combine decorative, exhibition and practical functions. The European otter enclosure was designed as a visually realistic, technically durable space suited to the character of a zoological facility. It is an example of theming that is not merely decoration, but a tool for building a credible nature-inspired biotope.
