Project Overview

The Orientarium ZOO Łódź theming project was created as part of a large-scale investment combining the functions of a zoo and an oceanarium, dedicated to Asian ecosystems. The entire complex covers 7.48 ha, and the usable floor area of the building is 36,911 m². The client was Municipal Zoo in Łódź, the general contractor was Mosty Łódź S.A., and the lead architect was Szlachcic Architekci under Dorota Szlachcic. The project was developed between 2017 and 2021, while the facility was completed in 2022.

Skalisty, together with Odaibe Visuals, participated in developing the comprehensive theming design for the Orientarium. The design process lasted four years and covered animal enclosures both inside the building and outside it. The main goal was to create realistic biotopes that build an engaging visitor experience while responding to the needs of individual animal species.

The design scope included support structures and decoration substructures, artificial rocks, replicas of Asian temples, sculptures, reliefs, artificial trees, coral reefs, waterfalls and enclosure equipment. The documentation also covered execution technology, detailed descriptions of individual elements and material specifications required for the proper delivery of large-scale zoological and aquarium decorations.

Biotope design required interdisciplinary cooperation between architects, biologists, technologists, structural engineers and specialists responsible for scenery and life-support systems. 3D environmental models were developed, animal behavior was analyzed, and rock formations and landscapes characteristic of Asia were studied. This allowed the architecture, technical installations and theming to create a coherent exhibition space.

The Orientarium as a whole has been recognized in numerous architectural competitions, including the European Property Awards 2022-2023 and the SARP Award of the Year 2023. The project shows how advanced theming design can combine architecture, biology, engineering and set design in a modern zoological facility.
