Orientarium - Asiatic Lion Enclosure at ZOO Łódź is a project delivered as part of a modern exhibition facility presenting the ecosystems of Asia. The project was completed in 2019, and the scope included 220 m² of decorations for the Asiatic lion enclosure. The client was Municipal Zoo in Łódź, and the general contractor was Mosty Łódź S.A.
Skalisty's role included preparing the concept design in cooperation with lead architect Dorota Szlachcic and delivering the enclosure theming. The main element was an artificial cave designed to conceal the exit from the technical area and lion den into the enclosure. The rock formations were designed as large boulders surrounding the entrance, so the technical element became naturally integrated into the exhibition landscape.
The project also included an artificial tree trunk, which became one of the most distinctive points of the entire enclosure. The element was designed so that the lions could enter it and use it as a shaded shelter. Particular attention was paid to sculpting the bark and exposed wood so the detail remained visible even from a greater distance.
The composition was complemented by an artificial rock beside the observation carriage, from which visitors can safely observe the animals through glazed elements. The decoration gave this part of the enclosure a more natural and dynamic character, combining exhibition function with zoological theming. The decorative works were completed in a very short time - within 20 days.
The Orientarium project shows how artificial rocks for zoos, artificial caves and artificial trees can serve aesthetic, practical and masking functions at the same time. The project combined the technical requirements of a zoological facility with realistic scenery, creating a coherent space for animals and an attractive experience for visitors.
