to prevent Chinese fishing boats from stealing fishing nets as they venture into South Korean territorial waters. Following approval by the National Assembly, South Korea will install 30-metric-ton blocks of artificial rocks in the waters along the country’s northern border to prevent illegal fishing under the pretext of pursuing poachers. The total cost of the project will be $7 million, according to Yonhap News Agency

The exact location where the artificial rocks will be deployed will be selected after consultations with South Korean fishermen and the Ministry of Defense.

Chinese fishing vessels frequently violate South Korea’s territorial waters, and the number of such violations is steadily increasing due to the area’s very rich fishing grounds. The South Korean government hopes that the artificial rocks will help reduce the number of illegal fishing vessels in South Korean territorial waters.
