European Otter Exhibit

After a brief break following the completion of the renovation of the argus butterfly aviary at the Warsaw Zoo, we began preparations for our next project.

October 2018 was the month in which we began work on the construction of the European otter enclosure. The project was part of the expansion of the existing Odrarium, which was being carried out by ISB Budownictwo.

It is an impressive enclosure covering nearly 1,000 square meters, with a 100,000-liter pool at its center. Our thematic design primarily involved direct spray-coating to simulate earth on reinforced concrete walls covered with polyurea waterproofing. We broke up the geometry of the walls using three-dimensional rock formations, built both inside and outside the pool.

The weather conditions toward the end of the project were no longer favorable. We managed to catch the first frosts, during which we sculpted an artificial beach and the final rock formations in the otter pool. It was also under these conditions that we built the artificial rock formation, which rests against the walls of the technical building housing the water filters, allowing otters to swim underneath it—right next to the observation point located inside an acrylic cylinder. This interesting project was completed by the end of November thanks to a sustained high pace of work.
